New Build

Barkham Ride Scheme 1
An existing dilapidated property was to be replaced by new contemporary homes. The site sits on the edge of the countryside and is surrounded by an interesting pattern of development including back land properties. A pre-planning application helped to shape the scheme and a proposal for 3 family homes was developed, with two properties fronting the highway and a further property sitting behind. The accommodation proposed included large open plan living spaces and generous en-suite bedrooms over three floors. The design takes advantage of its location and uses materials and form to create a transition from urbanisation to the countryside.

Unfortunately planning permission was refused and an alternative scheme was developed in response to the reasons for refusal.

Barkham Ride Scheme 2

Following the refusal of planning permission for three units an alternative scheme proposing two detached properties was developed to replace the existing chalet style property. As with the first scheme the accommodation proposed is generous with open plan living spaces and en-suite bedrooms. The opportunity is taken to bring natural light into the plan from above, the use of vaulted ceiling creates some exciting spaces. Once again, the use of materials and form seeks to create a transition from urbanisation to the adjacent countryside.

Works began on site in Autumn 2019 and are due to complete in spring 2020.

Hurst Close

This project involved the demolition of two thirds of an existing non-descript brick house and via the addition of substantial new build elements and complete re-cladding an extensive contemporary residence was created. Boasting open plan living areas to both front and rear each of the five-bedroom suites has an en-suite bathroom, dressing area and external terrace. The sloping site presented some interesting design opportunities which enabled the creation of a sub-basement to house garaging and games space.

Large glazed areas ensure strong connections to the external spaces and views beyond taking advantage of the site’s elevated position. The top floor mater-suite sits within a penthouse style box and features a wraparound terrace.

Northwood

This virtual new build came about following the refusal of planning permission for a larger replacement property on the site. Instead the existing bungalow was extended up and out and encapsulated within a new skim to create a stunning contemporary home. Open plan living space overlooks the substantial rear garden. There are five bedrooms three of which are en-suite as well as further reception and study space. The original property was side entry, the brief for the new home was to enter through the front which enabled an impressive entrance hall to be formed which features a top lit staircase set within a double height space.

Barkham Ride Rear Unit

This proposal for a single detached unit on the rear of the Barkham Ride scheme 2 site has taken into consideration the reasons for the planning refusal of Barkham Ride scheme 1. A chalet style property which is accessed via an existing right of way the design has also had to consider issues of overlooking. The site fits within a pattern of existing back land development and provides a three bedroom property which like schemes 1 and 2 uses materials and form to create a transition from urbanisation to the adjacent countryside.
